Only 246 of Tamil Nadu's 3,850 deemed MBBS seats are NRI. Here is exactly where they are, what they cost, and what verification actually asks for.

The NRI quota is the least understood route into MBBS, and the one most often misrepresented to families. It is a legitimate, government-sanctioned category with a defined seat count and a published fee — not a back door, and not something an agent can arrange outside counselling.
In Tamil Nadu self-financing colleges, NRI seats are part of the state counselling and carry the state-notified NRI fee, currently ₹27 lakh a year at most colleges and ₹30 lakh at the newer private universities. In deemed universities, NRI seats are allotted centrally by MCC in the same rounds as the merit pool, and the fee is set by each university.
Of 3,850 deemed MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu, only 246 are NRI — the rest go to the merit (SFMS) pool through MCC. The distribution is uneven, and several colleges have none at all.

Eligibility rests on the sponsor's status and their documented relationship to the candidate. Requirements are notified each year and typically include the sponsor's NRI status proof, an embassy or consulate-attested relationship certificate, an affidavit of sponsorship, and evidence that funds come from the sponsor's overseas account. Documents are verified at counselling, and a rejected NRI claim at verification means the seat is lost — there is no second chance on that round.
Compare honestly. An NRI seat at ₹27 lakh a year runs to roughly ₹1.5 crore in tuition alone across the course. A management-quota seat in the same category of college is substantially less, and a government-quota seat in a self-financing college is a fraction of it. NRI is worth it when the alternative is no seat at all — not as a first preference.
It depends on the year's notification. Rules on which relatives may sponsor have been tightened and challenged repeatedly, and a first-degree relationship is the safe assumption. Read the current year's prospectus rather than relying on what was allowed previously.
Unfilled NRI seats are converted as laid down in that year's rules — commonly to the merit or management pool at the corresponding fee — rather than being offered at a discount to NRI applicants.
You register in the same counselling and declare the NRI category, then upload the sponsorship documents. For deemed universities this is done in the MCC registration; for Tamil Nadu colleges, in the state counselling.
No. Deemed universities set their own NRI fees and they vary widely. The state-notified NRI fee applies only to Tamil Nadu self-financing colleges, not to deemed universities.
