Who was actually holding the vacancy

A big national vacancy number is the most misread figure in counselling. It does not mean government seats were going spare. Sorted by who held the seats, and what that meant for a candidate looking at the list:

The ten states that held most of it

Vacancy is not spread evenly across the country. Ten states held the bulk of it; everything else is summed into a single row, because at two or three seats a state the distinction stops being useful when you are ordering a choice list.

MBBS, BDS or Nursing — what the seats actually were

9,870 of the 11,302 seats were MBBS. The rest were BDS and B.Sc Nursing, which is why a headline vacancy figure always looks larger than the MBBS opportunity behind it.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, college by college

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry together held 3,088 seats, 27.3% of all Round 2 AIQ vacancy and more than any other state. Listed alphabetically so you can find a specific college rather than read a ranking:

Seats that arrived after the list was published

Two separate additions landed on top of the 11,302-seat file. MCC released 659 newly added seats in a parallel list on 3 September, and then 30 more MBBS seats at three institutes under Notice 19 on 5 September — choice filling was actually paused that evening and reopened after 7 PM so that candidates could add them. Anyone who locked choices early never saw the second batch.

Reading this for Round 3

Three patterns in the table above repeat every year and are worth carrying into your Round 3 list:

• Deemed vacancy does not clear. 49.3% of Round 2 vacancy sat in deemed universities, and it is the block most likely to still be open in Round 3 — because the constraint is the fee, not the rank. Check the annual fee, not the first-year figure, before you list one.
• Government-quota AIQ seats disappear first. They are a minority of the vacancy and the first to go, so a Round 3 list built only from them is a list that may return nothing.
• Geography concentrates. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra dominate the vacancy table in every round. If you will not travel, your real Round 3 list is shorter than the national number suggests.

MCC publishes a fresh clear-vacancy file before each round, and the Round 3 file supersedes everything on this page. Treat these numbers as the shape of the vacancy, not as seats you can still claim.
